Insect repellents
We collected the most important factors for you.
Summer is here and so are the insects.
Which are the most effective repellents?
There is no magic product, but here are some great tips:
1) Natural enemies:
> swallows: these birds effectively catch flies and mosquitoes around the stables, so it's definitely worth protecting their nests.
> chicken: these beloved poultry can eat flies still in their larvae stage from the manure (horse poo).
> lavender: this multi-functional plant not only scares away insects, but it also provides food for hungry bees and looks amazing around the stables. Not to mention the lovely scent!
Besides lavender, plant these flowers to keep annoying insects away: lemon grass, rosemary, geranium, petunia, basil, oregano, mint.
2) Natural traps: the gadfly trap
This smart invention operates 100% chemical free. You only need the warmth of the sun and a little water.
3) Other simple traps: UV-lamp, sticky paper or wire
4) Protection from within: garlic powder or garlic oil
Garlic evaporating from the skin is a great insect repellent. So it's worth adding it to your horse's daily feed during summertime (based on body weight, e.g. for a 500 kg horse max.30 grams a day).

5) Protection from outside: fly masks, fly sheets + anti-fly sprays
Put fly masks and/or fly sheets on your horse during the day, so insects can reach only a minimal surface of their skin.
